Yak Fiber

We hand brush our yaks and have their wool spun into yarn locally at Home | Coyote Trail Farm (coyotetrailfarmandfibermill.com)

Yaks shed their down coats in the springtime. They do not need to be sheared as the fiber can be picked up off the ground or brushed out. Yaks have three layers of fur; the inner most fine "down" layer (15 - 19 microns), the mid-coat that is slightly coarser but can be used for yarn, and the guard hairs, which could be used to make rope. The quality of yak yarn has been likened to quiviut (muskox fiber).
